The Complete Guide to Poland
Everything you need to know about visas, taxes, banking, and finding a home before you move.
Poland has quietly built one of the strongest IT and tech hubs in Europe (specifically in Warsaw and Krakow), drawing massive talent from the East and West.
The Poland Business Harbour (PBH)
- The Reality: The PBH was an incredibly successful, fast-track visa program specifically for IT specialists, particularly from neighboring non-EU countries. However, as of early 2024, the Polish government abruptly suspended the PBH program due to massive abuse and visa scandals. Do not rely on outdated blogs telling you to get the PBH.
Standard Work Visa & Blue Card
- If you are hired by a Polish tech company, you can apply for the EU Blue Card or a standard national work visa.
- The Bureaucracy: The provincial immigration offices (Urząd Wojewódzki) are catastrophically backlogged. Getting your physical residence card (Karta Pobytu) can take anywhere from 6 months to over a year. During this time, you get a stamp in your passport allowing you to stay and work, but you cannot easily travel within the Schengen zone.
Freelance (Business Incubators)
- The "Twoja Startup" Loophole: The most popular route for non-EU freelancers in Poland is using a "Business Incubator." You do not set up your own company. Instead, the incubator "hires" you. You invoice your foreign clients through the incubator, and the incubator pays you a "salary" after taking a monthly fee (around $100-$150). The incubator handles all accounting, taxes, and sponsors your work visa.
