The Complete Guide to Hungary
Everything you need to know about visas, taxes, banking, and finding a home before you move.
Hungary (specifically Budapest) is one of the most historically popular digital nomad hubs in Europe, offering stunning architecture at a fraction of Western European prices.
The White Card (Digital Nomad Visa)
Introduced recently, the White Card is designed specifically for remote workers.
- Requirements: You must prove a monthly income of at least €3,000 for the 6 months prior to applying. Your employer or clients must be located strictly outside of Hungary.
- Duration: Issued for 1 year, renewable for a maximum of 1 additional year (2 years total).
- The Catch: The White Card does not grant family reunification rights. You cannot bring a spouse or children on this visa; it is strictly for solo nomads. Furthermore, time spent on the White Card does not count toward permanent residency.
Other Routes
If you want to stay long-term, many freelancers use the "Gainful Activity" visa by setting up a KATA business (though recent changes have made this much harder for expats).
