Cost of Living in Morocco

Planning your move to Morocco? Here is everything you need to know about cost of living for digital nomads and expats in 2026.

Morocco has strict capital controls and is heavily cash-dependent outside of major hotels and supermarkets.

  • The Dirham (MAD) is Closed: The Moroccan Dirham is a closed currency. You cannot legally take more than a tiny amount of it out of the country. When you leave, you must convert it back to EUR/USD at the airport.
  • International Cards: Withdrawing cash from local ATMs (like Attijariwafa Bank or BMCE) using a foreign debit card works fine, but local ATMs charge high fees.
  • Cash is King: If you live in a Medina (the old city), you will need cash for everything—from buying bread, to paying the local hammam, to taking a "Petit Taxi."
