Switzerland is the most exclusive and expensive base for high-net-worth nomads. It fiercely protects its labor market, making traditional remote work legally complex.

Non-EU Nationals (Third-Country Nationals)

For Americans, Brits, and Asians, getting a residence permit to simply "work remotely" is practically impossible.

• The B Permit (Employment): You must be hired by a Swiss company. The company must prove to the cantonal authorities that they could not find a suitable Swiss or EU/EFTA citizen to fill the role.
• The Independent Route: Setting up a company (GmbH or AG) requires massive capital (e.g., 100,000 CHF for an AG) and a business plan proving you will create jobs for local Swiss citizens.
• Lump-Sum Taxation (For the Ultra-Rich): If you are extremely wealthy, do not work in Switzerland, and agree to pay a massive annual flat tax (often negotiated around 250,000 CHF to 400,000 CHF per year based on your living expenses, not your income), you can effectively buy a residence permit.

EU/EFTA Nationals

If you hold an EU passport, you have the right to free movement.

• You can move to Switzerland, register as self-employed, and secure a B Permit, provided you can prove sufficient income and health insurance.
