Self-Employment Visa

If you want to move to Sweden without a local job offer, you must apply as a self-employed person.

• Requirements: You must have significant experience in your field, prove you have the funds to support yourself for the first 2 years (roughly 200,000 SEK, or $19,000 USD), and crucially, your business must have a strong nexus to Sweden (e.g., selling goods or services to Swedish customers).
• The Catch: Pure remote work for a US employer does not usually satisfy the business nexus requirement. The Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) scrutinizes these applications heavily.

Work Permit

Being hired by a Swedish company is the standard route. In 2023/2024, Sweden dramatically increased the minimum salary requirement for work permits to 80% of the median salary (around 27,360 SEK/month), effectively blocking cheap foreign labor in sectors like hospitality.
