Spanish banking is highly regulated and heavily reliant on the NIE (Foreigner Identity Number).
- The NIE Barrier: You cannot open a traditional bank account, sign a long-term lease, or get home internet without a NIE.
- Best Banks: BBVA and Santander offer "Fee-Free" digital accounts, but they strictly require a resident NIE. N26 (with a Spanish IBAN) is the best immediate solution for nomads.
- Social Security: If you are an independent contractor (freelancer) under the DNV, you must register as an Autónomo. This comes with a mandatory monthly social security fee starting at around €80/month for the first year, jumping to €300+ in subsequent years.
