Digital Nomad Visa & Immigration in Portugal

Planning your move to Portugal? Here is everything you need to know about digital nomad visa & immigration for digital nomads and expats in 2026.

Portugal remains one of the most popular digital nomad hubs in Europe, but the landscape has changed significantly in 2026. The famous D8 Digital Nomad Visa is the primary route.

The D8 Digital Nomad Visa (2026 Updates)

  • Income Threshold: As of 2026, you must prove a minimum monthly income of €3,680 (four times the Portuguese minimum wage).
  • Remote Work Proof: You must provide a valid work contract or freelance agreements showing that your income is generated entirely outside of Portugal.
  • Duration: The D8 is initially issued as a 4-month entry visa, which you then convert into a 2-year residence permit upon arriving in Portugal. It can be renewed for an additional 3 years. After 5 years of legal residency, you can apply for Portuguese citizenship.

PRO Tip: The immigration office (AIMA) is currently facing severe backlogs. Always apply through the Portuguese consulate in your home country rather than arriving as a tourist and attempting to change your status.
