Digital Nomad Visa & Immigration in Norway
Planning your move to Norway? Here is everything you need to know about digital nomad visa & immigration for digital nomads and expats in 2026.
Norway is arguably the wealthiest Scandinavian country, largely due to its sovereign wealth fund, but it maintains strict barriers to entry.
The Independent Contractor Visa (Svalbard Exception aside)
If you wish to live in mainland Norway as a freelancer, you must apply as a Self-Employed Person.
- Requirements: You must prove that your business will establish a local presence in Norway and bring an economic benefit to the country. This means having Norwegian clients. Simply working from a laptop for a US tech company will result in a rejection.
- The Svalbard Loophole: The remote archipelago of Svalbard is an entirely visa-free zone. Anyone from any country can live and work there indefinitely without a visa, provided they can financially support themselves and secure housing. However, it is located in the high Arctic, plagued by polar bears, and experiences total darkness for 4 months a year.
Skilled Worker Visa
The easiest route is being hired by a Norwegian company. The minimum salary requirement is around 480,000 NOK (for bachelor's degrees) to 516,000 NOK (for master's degrees).
