Cost of Living in Laos

The Lao Kip (LAK) has suffered severe depreciation and high inflation in recent years. Parallel exchange rates often exist between official bank rates and street money changers. Foreigners on tourist visas cannot open bank accounts. Even for residents, international wire transfers are difficult, expensive, and subject to strict capital controls.
