Digital Nomad Visa & Immigration in Japan

Planning your move to Japan? Here is everything you need to know about digital nomad visa & immigration for digital nomads and expats in 2026.

Japan has finally entered the digital nomad race, launching its highly anticipated Digital Nomad Visa (Specified Visa), but it comes with extreme limitations that make it unsuitable for true residency seekers.

The Digital Nomad Visa (2026)

  • Requirements: You must prove an annual income of 10 million JPY (approx. $68,000 USD) and hold private health insurance.
  • The Fatal Flaw (Duration): The visa is only valid for 6 months, and it cannot be renewed. Worse, you cannot reapply for another DNV until 6 months after your previous one expired. It does not lead to permanent residency.
  • The Verdict: It is essentially an extended tourist visa. Most nomads from visa-waiver countries (US, UK, EU) prefer simply staying for 90 days as a tourist, leaving, and returning.

The Business Manager Visa

For those wanting to actually live in Japan.

  • Requirements: Invest 5 million JPY (approx. $34,000 USD) into a Japanese company and secure a physical office space.
  • Benefits: Leads to a 1-year (renewable) residence card, allowing you to join the national health insurance system and eventually apply for PR.
