Cost of Living in Japan

Planning your move to Japan? Here is everything you need to know about cost of living for digital nomads and expats in 2026.

Japan's banking system is notoriously archaic and paper-based.

  • The Hanko (Inkan): To open a bank account or sign a lease, you often need a registered personal seal (Hanko) made of wood or plastic. Signatures are rarely accepted.
  • Opening an Account: You cannot open a bank account on a tourist visa or the 6-month DNV. You need a standard Residence Card (Zairyu Card) valid for at least 6 months. Shinsei Bank or Sony Bank are the most foreigner-friendly.
  • Cash is Still Heavy: While PayPay and Suica have digitized much of daily life, many small restaurants (Izakayas) and rural areas still operate strictly on cash.
