Digital Nomad Visa & Immigration in Italy

Planning your move to Italy? Here is everything you need to know about digital nomad visa & immigration for digital nomads and expats in 2026.

Italy's highly anticipated Digital Nomad Visa finally became operational, but the bureaucratic reality on the ground in 2026 is famously complex.

The Italy Digital Nomad Visa (DNV)

  • Requirements: You must prove an income of at least 3x the minimum level required for exemption from healthcare participation. In 2026, this translates to roughly €2,700/month. You also need a university degree OR 5 years of professional experience in your field.
  • The Process: You apply at your local Italian consulate. Upon arriving in Italy, you have 8 days to apply for your Permesso di Soggiorno (Residence Permit) at the local Questura (police station).
  • The "Questura" Bottleneck: The police stations are severely backlogged. You might wait 6-9 months just to get your physical residence card. During this time, you have a paper receipt (ricevuta) that technically allows you to stay, but makes traveling outside of Italy (or opening a bank account) incredibly difficult.

The Elective Residence Visa (ERV)

For passive income earners (retirees, landlords, dividend earners). You cannot work at all on this visa. You must prove around €32,000/year in purely passive income.
