  • The AFM (Tax Number): Getting an AFM (Arithmos Forologikou Mitroou) is your first step. You cannot sign a lease or open a bank account without it. You can get it easily at a local tax office (DOY) or via an accountant.
  • Banking UX: Greek banks (Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, Eurobank) are decades behind Northern Europe. Apps are clunky, customer service is poor, and branch visits are frequently required for simple tasks. Most nomads use Revolut or N26 for daily spending.
  • The Cash Surcharge: To combat the massive black market economy, Greece legally requires you to spend 30% of your declared income via electronic means (cards, wire transfers). If you don't, you face a 22% penalty tax on the shortfall.
