Digital Nomad Visa & Immigration in Germany
Planning your move to Germany? Here is everything you need to know about digital nomad visa & immigration for digital nomads and expats in 2026.
Germany offers one of the oldest and most established freelance visas in Europe, known for its extreme bureaucracy but eventual stability.
The Freelance Visa (Freiberufler)
This is strictly for "liberal professions" (engineers, software developers, artists, writers, consultants). It is not for commercial traders (Gewerbe).
- Requirements: You must prove you have clients. Crucially, while you can have foreign clients, the Ausländerbehörde (Immigration Office) heavily prefers to see at least one German client or a "local economic interest" in your work.
- Financial Proof: You need to show savings (usually around €10,000) or a reliable monthly income.
- The Berlin Factor: The immigration office in Berlin (LEA) is notoriously overwhelmed. Getting an appointment can take 6 months. Many nomads hire a relocation agency (costing €1,000 - €2,500) simply to secure an appointment and handle the paperwork.
