  • The Anmeldung (Registration): You cannot do anything in Germany without the Meldebescheinigung (a certificate proving you registered your address at the local town hall). You need this to open a bank account, get internet, or get a tax ID.
  • Getting the Anmeldung: To get it, you need a signed lease and a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (a form signed by the landlord confirming you moved in). Since finding housing is nearly impossible, this creates a massive bottleneck.
  • N26: The Berlin-based fintech N26 is the default for nomads, allowing account opening with just a passport and an address.
  • Cash Dependency: Despite the pandemic, Germany remains stubbornly reliant on cash. Many restaurants, bakeries, and small shops strictly display "Nur Bar" (Cash Only) or only accept the local "EC-Karte" (Girocard), rejecting Visa and Mastercard.
