Digital Nomad Visa & Immigration in Bulgaria
Planning your move to Bulgaria? Here is everything you need to know about digital nomad visa & immigration for digital nomads and expats in 2026.
Bulgaria is Europe's ultimate low-tax jurisdiction. Bansko, a small ski town, has organically become one of the most famous digital nomad hubs in the world.
Digital Nomad Visa (The Freelance Visa)
There is no specific "Digital Nomad" visa. Non-EU citizens typically use the Freelance Visa (Type D).
- Requirements: This is notoriously difficult to get. You must prove you have a highly specialized skill, provide a detailed business plan (in Bulgarian), and prove you have sufficient funds. You must apply at an embassy abroad, and the approval rate for non-EU citizens without local ties is low.
- The TRO (Trade Representative Office) Route: Many non-EU nomads bypass the freelance visa by setting up a TRO. If you own a foreign company, you can register a "representative office" in Bulgaria. This doesn't allow you to conduct local business, but it grants you the right to a long-term Type D visa and a residence permit (VNP).
EU Citizens
If you hold an EU passport, moving to Bulgaria is seamless. You simply arrive, sign a lease, and apply for your local ID card.
