Cost of Living in Brazil
Planning your move to Brazil? Here is everything you need to know about cost of living for digital nomads and expats in 2026.
Brazil’s banking system is technologically world-class, completely bypassing the US/European legacy systems.
- The CPF: The Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas is the Brazilian tax ID. It is required for absolutely everything: buying a SIM card, booking a domestic flight, ordering food on iFood, or visiting a pharmacy. You can actually apply for a CPF via email before you even arrive in Brazil.
- PIX: The absolute pinnacle of digital payments. PIX allows instant, free, 24/7 money transfers using just a phone number, email, or QR code. Even a guy selling coconuts on the beach in Rio accepts PIX.
- The Foreigner Lockout: To use PIX, you must have a Brazilian bank account. To open a Brazilian bank account (like Nubank or Itaú), you usually need a physical residence permit (CRNM). Nomads on a 90-day tourist visa are largely locked out of PIX and must rely on cash or international credit cards (which face heavy surcharges).
